چکیده

Nitric oxide (NO), which occurs as a gaseous chemical messenger in the brain, is synthesized from L-arginine by nitric oxide synthase (NOS) as a coproduct of L-citrulline (1). NO has been well documented to have a neurotransmitter/neuromodulator role in the brain (2). Studies carried out on passive avoidance response of rats treated with Larginine and N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), and inhibitor of NOS (3), have suggested that NO has a significant role in learning and memory processes. In these studies, memory has been found to be faciLitated following an increased synthesis of NO in animals treated with L-arginine (4). Conversely, administration of a NO decreasing dose of L-NAME has impaired memory of rats to radial arm maze task (5). However, the effect of L-arginine and LNAME have not been tested on memory of rats to previously learnt active avoidance task. Thus, the present study has been designed to assess the effects of these compounds on shock avoidance task of rats using a traditional pole-climbing apparatus (6). The effect of L-arginine was tested in LNAME-pretreated animals also.

Differential effects of inactivation of the right and left basolateral amygdala on spatial memory in place avoidance task in rats

There is strong evidence that two cerebral hemispheres are differentially involved in emotional memory and that amygdala is a key subcortical structure for emotional experience. The present research investigated the possible involvement of lateralization of basolateral amygdala (BLA) and central amygdala (CEA) in place avoidance memory. For this purpose, male Long-Evans rats (280-320 g) were im...

The role of hippocampal nitric oxide in passive avoidance learning

Abstract: Introduction: Nitric oxide (NO) is a retrograde messenger in hippocampal synaptic plasticity which involves in learning and memory processes. Previous studies revealed that hippocampal pyramidal cells contain NO synthase (NOS) enzyme which produce NO and could be a promising target to evaluate the role of NO in brain cognitive functions. So in this study, using NOS inhibitor (L-NAME)...

The effects of nitric oxide production blockage by aminoguanidine on passive avoidance memory and expression of Bcl-2 family genes in diabetic rats

Introduction: Memory impairment is one of the complications of diabetes which may accompany with changes in expression of apoptotic and antiapoptotic genes. The aim of the present study was the evaluation of intra-hippocampal injection of aminoguanidine (AG), as an antioxidant and inducible nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, on passive avoidance memory and Bcl-2 family genes expression in diab...

Role of L-NAME, a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, in the improvement of morphine-induced amnesia induced by nicotine

Introduction: Drugs of abuse such as nicotine and morphine used systemically by addicts produce their effects via the mesolimbic dopaminergic pathway. Furthermore, evidence indicates that some behavioral effects of nicotine and morphine are mediated by nitric oxide (NO). Based on these observations, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of intra-nucleus accumbens (NAc) ...

Effect of intrahippocampal L-NAME injection on passive avoidance memory in adult male rats exposed to restraint stress

Introduction: Nitric oxide is an important messenger in hippocampal region which is affected in learning and memory processes and hippocampal responses to stress. In this study, we investigated the effect of L-NAME on passive avoidance memory in adult male rats exposed to restraint-stress. Methods: For this purpose, male Wistar rats were bilaterally implanted with cannulas aimed at the CA1 r...
